Catherine “Cat” Deveney has a lot on her
mind these days. Her boyfriend, who’s been repeatedly
unfaithful, is pressuring her to agree to his marriage
proposal. Although he’s verbally abusive and less than
hero-material, she’s been unsuccessfully trying to break up
with him for three years. She figures she just doesn’t have
what it takes to stand up to him. Not even now, when time is
of the essence. Terminally ill, Cat knows she doesn’t have
much longer to live. That’s part of the reason for the haste
in the marriage proposal. Her boyfriend has his eye on a fancy
car—as well as on Cat’s insurance policy and the money her
parents left her.
So when the ceiling at the library
where she works collapses on her during an earthquake, she
figures her time’s come a little sooner than she’d
anticipated. She doesn’t expect to wake up at all—much less in
a strange place, where people have never heard of Seattle or
telephones. And when they start to speak of a mysterious
“Sleeper” who’s awakened to save the world, she starts to
think she may be dreaming the entire experience. Things get
even more complicated when she meets a man who looks exactly
like her no-good boyfriend, but that’s where the similarities
between the two men end. He’s tasked with delivering her
safely to the ritual grounds. But how can he do that, when he
doesn’t believe she’s the prophesied “Sleeper”?
With
The Sleeper Awakes, Eilis Flynn has quickly catapulted
herself to the top of any fantasy fan’s “must buy” list. She’s
taken a pretty typical plot device (the woman waking up in a
world completely different from our own and learning she’s
expected to save the world) and given it her own, fascinating
twists. But by far the strength of this marvelous book lies in
Ms. Flynn’s writing
style. She writes with a confident flair that shines in every
page, drawing the reader farther and farther into Cat’s
dilemma with each chapter.
Cat herself is smart,
savvy and genuinely likable. It’s wonderful to see her face
her issues head-on and rise to the challenge when called upon.
Although the plot isn’t unique, fantasy fans will be drawn in
by the familiar plot elements and will be forced to continue
reading way past their bedtime. With smooth pacing and
genuinely interesting character, Ms.
Flynn has written a book that demands to be
read in one sitting.

From Paranormalromance.org:
"Enter a world of
imagination"
Gates Mountain loomed over the small town. Named for
the seven gates; some of wood, some of Iron. Beautiful to look upon, told
to be the guards for the town below. Others thought that the gates were in
some way related to the prophecy. That the "Sleeper" would end a
long-running war, and halt waterfire-a devastating weather
phenomenon.
Cat Deveney lives in Seattle and works in a library,
along with two of her best friends Kevin and Margot. Suddenly Seattle is
hit with an earthquake, taking refuge under a table the trio hopes to be
able to survive the quake. Cat is trapped under the table injured. She
slips into a dream state not really knowing for sure what is real and what
isn't.
When she awakes in a strange land, Cat soon learns that the
town's people believe that she is the "sleeper", the key to the prophecy.
Many of the town's people remind Cat of the people she knew in Seattle.
Different somehow, same face but different personality. Mark, her current
boyfriend, lives in the city, works inside and stays out of the sun. And
only seems to be in love with her for her money. This man however has
Mark's face, is tan, has a streak in his hair just like Mark but his is
pure violet and runs through the back of his head. Pir Strian is his name.
Pir is given the privilege of escorting Cat on her long journey, across
the mountain to seek advice. Pir is drawn to her. Watching and wondering;
is she really the one to bring the prophecy to fulfillment? Or a spy from
another land? Over time he starts to believe in her.
Author Eilis
Flynn has used great imagination in creating this book. The creation of
waterfire was in my eyes the best part, I would like to see it for myself.
With a gift of creative thinking and the ability to relay that to the
reader, I'm sure Ms. Flynn will soon be on the best seller
list.

The Sleeper
Awakes Eilis Flynn ISBN:
978-1-41990-855-2
Ms. Flynn pens a fantastical tale of
adventure and love. Catherine Deveney doesn't have long to live. She
has a malignant tumor, a crippled leg, and a lover who would love to marry
her to get her insurance money. An earthquake hits Seattle and Cat
is crushed under a table. When she awakens, she's in a foreign land
with strange people and a macabre natural disaster--waterfire.
Strian, Prince of Kurit and brother to the Court, is
suspicious of Cat and suspects her of spying for the man who killed his
nephew while attempting to usurp the throne. But the prince needs
her for the Ritual to stay the power of the waterfire and save the kingdom
from certain destruction.
The love of the people in Kurit helps Cat become a
determined woman, bold enough to fulfill her duty to the people. She
agrees to accompany Strian in a physically and mentally challenging quest
to complete the Ritual. But her heart has been wounded in her other
life, so can she be brave enough to let Strian into her heart?
This debut book pulled me in from the first page and
kept me reading way past my bedtime. If you love fantasy with a
dollop of romance, this is the book for you. Eilis
Flynn is a author to remember, and is definitely a new addition
to my autobuy list!

From Romance Reader At Heart
Reviews:
THE SLEEPER AWAKES by Eilis
Flynn is a story that will remain with the reader long after the
final page has been turned. It is one of those novels, and we've all read
them, that sticks in the mind and heart for a long, long time. THE
SLEEPER AWAKES is so well told that as soon as I finished it I
wanted to begin reading it all over again, just to relive the tale and
pick up any nuances or tidbits I'd missed with the first go-round.
When terminally-ill librarian Catherine Deveney and her two
co-workers are caught in an earthquake, it seems as if her already
precarious situation is about to get worse. A lot worse. But as the
library crumbles around them in Seattle, a gate opens in the distant land
of Kurit. And on the grass near the open gate on Gates Mount, Catherine
Deveney and her two friends lay unconscious.
The legend of the
land is that when all seven of the gates on Gates Mount open, peace
everlasting will reign. Catherine lies within the shadow of the first open
gate. The legend has begun.
THE SLEEPER AWAKES
has it all. Adventure, romance and a host of intriguing characters make
this book a Top Pick. I loved this story and I believe that others will,
too. Eilis Flynn has a hit with THE SLEEPER AWAKES, and
anyone who believes that love can conquer all will want to read this book
time and again.
I hope that sometime in the very near future the
second gate on Gates Mount opens and the story continues. Personally, I
can't wait to see what happens next!
