Back to One Juror Down

Cass Bellair and Ben Cameron meet while serving on a jury. They are very attracted to each other and are just starting to get to know one another when things start to go wrong. Someone steals Cass’s purse and she overhears someone in the courthouse talking that makes her think she was targeted on purpose. Then a young woman on the jury is murdered. And suddenly the man who terrorized Cass and her sister, Georgia, years ago appears on the scene and Ben knows him from college. Is everything going on related to this trial? Is Ben involved somehow? Who can Cass trust and turn to?

This is a very interesting and intriguing story. I liked the characters of Cass and Ben and wanted there to be a romance between them. Both of them seem like nice people you’d want as your neighbors. But besides there being a good romance theme running through the story with the interaction and chemistry between Cass and Ben, there is an underlying sense of unrest and danger.

There are several sinister characters that keep brushing up against Cass’s life making the reader uneasy. And then the idea that it might not be that difficult for a determined criminal to find a way to threaten someone on a jury and affect the verdict didn’t make me comfortable. These kinds of stories where the author makes a distasteful idea, like jury tampering, very plausible always make me think and wonder if there could be some truth to it, even in a fiction tale. I enjoyed One Juror Down. I found it entertaining and thought provoking. I am glad to see there is a sequel about Cass’s sister Georgia, Two on the Hunt, and her situation that is mentioned in this story. I am looking forward to reading what happens next.

One Juror Down by Heather Hiestand

Cass Bellair, a floral design specialist, is called to jury duty. At first things seem to flow perfectly, and she meets Ben Cameron a fellow juror. They spend their breaks together, getting to know one another. Suddenly, strange things start to occur to Cass - someone snatches her purse and her ex-brother in law shows up bearing gifts for her grandmother. Cass also overhears someone talking about a juror’s purse being snatched and searched for notes about the trial. Though she knows they are discussing her, she puts it to the side and continues with the trial. She soon discovers that Ben and her ex brother-in-law were college drinking buddies. Can she trust Ben or is he involved in the conspiracy? Cass receives a shocking note. She has been singled out to be the one juror that has to convince the others into voting not guilty. Can Cass influence the other jurors to her way of thinking?

Owning his own company and serving on jury duty leaves Ben Cameron with no time for a personal life. He meets fellow juror Cass and feels instantly connected to her. She’s unlike the other women he has dated. But when she learns of his past she starts to dodge him. The situation becomes lethal when a fellow juror is found murdered. It seems that juror was overheard saying her verdict of guilty wouldn’t be changed. Can Ben gain Cass’s trust in time or will her family end up dead?

Heather Hiestand’s ONE JUROR DOWN is a marvellously well written story. Ben and Cass fit together like two pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. As I read each page I was kept wondering who was involved. Heather did a superb job keeping me on my toes. This book is perfect for anyone who likes to read suspense.

One Juror Down by Heather Hiestand

One Juror Down

This is the story of a woman who has so many responsibilities that a stint at jury duty sounds like a vacation! Cass Bellair, floral designer, compiles a shopping list for her grandmother and daydreams about the hunk in the courtroom with her as the jury is selected. Becoming a juror has more complications involved than Cass has cleaning up after her grandmother. Soon her purse has been snatched and she’s a victim—in more ways than one. Some serious decisions fall to her shoulders. They weren’t ones she had counted on but they had to be made since the outcome of the trial could affect the rest of her life. Through it all, she must deal with Ben and her feelings toward him. Will they find justice as well as happiness in a crowded courtroom?

One Juror Down is a typical story of overcoming odds to find love. Cass and Ben are mostly likeable characters, although there were times when I wanted to smack Cass for being so spineless. She let her grandmothe r ride roughshod over her so often it broke my heart. The plot is well written, with unexpected turns that took my breath away. The cop’s reaction when Cass’s purse is snatched is so unfeeling I wanted to scream. Ms. Hiestand has written a story that evokes many emotions while it entertains.
